Session 13 reflection, thanks to our dearest teacher, Paul

Tonight would be our last lesson in e-learning for English teaching course. It was only the end of a module but a brand new start of our teaching life. Thanks to our adorable, smart, trendy, remarkable and dearest teacher, Paul. He is so creative and hard-working that we were taught with lots of latest apps to teach English. That’s our most treasurable teaching resources, and the most important thing is that, he has enlightened us with never-ending learning heart in English teaching. Thanks a lot, Paul!
We first made use of Google Form to make a questionnaire with students to find out their preference in leisure activities. I made a form to ask specifically about their interest in water sports. I think that would arouse students’ interest in getting information of what their friends are thinking. That would be a very good pre-writing task for students to gather enough writing ideas.
The most unforgettable moment tonight would be the ‘kahoot’ games battling our classmates. No matter we would get a prize or not, the feeling of winning would ever touch our heart with the sense of satisfactory, happy and successfulness. That would be an exciting game in class and very welcomed by students, but we need to consider the discipline problem because they would be over-excited for sure.

Last but not least, GoFormative quiz sheet is very user-friendly for us to make comprehension questions. We can even upload ‘PDF’ files and no limitations for the file types for manipulating! That is very convenience as we cannot always get ‘DOC’ file for Worksheets making! With this kind of quiz making tools, we can have more choices for students!

Session 12 reflection

We met a very special guest tonight, Ms Zoe Chan. She is very experienced in manipulating IT skills with teaching English. All I learnt from her tonight was amazing! Not only because of her wonderful teaching strategies, but also how her students were enjoying learning English with all these latest skills. The smiles of her students were the motivation for me to improve, to excel with my teaching habits. I must learn from her! Quizlet, Nearpod, Adobe Spark video and padlet, all are keys to success in latest teaching trend!
Then we started to make our own ‘Nearpod’ live lesson. I can’t imagine that just one software could apply many purposes. We can manage voting with ‘Poll’, we can teach vocabulary with embedded ‘Quizlet’, we can ask them to do instant MC questions……….Wow! So powerful for multi-teaching purpose! Even for writing, students won’t refuse to write anymore when they can share their writings in front of the class using ‘Nearpod’! Since they can draw, and race for the fastest writer! That is the first priority I need to use in my class for sure!

My interactive Nearpod lesson about good habits (adverbs of frequency)

Nearpod about good habits for children.
Learn how to use 'once, twice, three times'.

Session 11 reflection

Tonight, the first thing I learnt was 'powtoon', it is a wonderful idea to get students’ attention. They would be engaged in the coming learning activities. However, Paul reminded us that it could not be overused as the effect would be vanished.

‘Pinterest’ is a powerful source for finding teaching ideas. From now on, I won’t worry about ‘how to teach’, ideas would always be here.

‘Padlet’ is very interesting to gather ideas from the class! It is amazing that watching tones of wonderful ideas popping up in front of you at the same time. I can also make use of it to put all my teaching materials here. It would be very handy when I want to get back something in a short period of time.

How to make a difference in using PowerPoint to teach? Here comes a solution: Prezi. It is like a PowerPoint but with some animated issue which would make my presentation lively. Just like stepping up to reach a goal, the atmosphere would be boosted up with using Prezi.

Session 10 reflection

I cannot imagine how simple nowadays to produce some interesting videos with lots of websites.

'Storybird' is simple and user-friendly for students to use. Primary kids can also master it to make a lot of interesting and wonderful videos. But we need to use the pictures it provided, maybe it is for fun for little kids.

However, with 'mystorybook', we can make some personal stories with meaningful messages. It is not hard to use and even kids can add on their own pictures to tell their own stories. It is really very meaningful for children.

How to move someone with the messages in you? Simple video with your memorable photos, background music and your touching message would do. "My 4B babies" by Ms Ani Chan is really a role model for me to show my students how powerful digital story-telling is.

Also with 'ginger it' and 'eTutor',

Reflection on session 9

Making cloze passages and cross word puzzles are really hard tasks for teachers. It is not convenience to adjust the format in Word. But with the J Cloze and J Cross, it is no longer a problem. In addition, students can do it just like playing games, they would enjoy practicing English!

'Nearpod' is becoming more popular in e-learning now. There is so much interaction between students and the teacher using it. I think I should be more familiar to this app in the future.

How to teach reading comprehension is always a problem, but with the help of 'Actively Learn', reading comprehension is no longer a hard task for teaching. Questions could be inserted to passage and we need not to swap again and again between the passage and the questions. And students could get clearer understanding with clear notes and referrals. I will practice more in using it.

My first 'Digital Story telling' Project: A story for the Mother's Day. I did the voice-over for both the mother and the little girl! (Funny and amazing! With special sound effects!)

This is the video I made for teaching the love of mother.

Session 8 reflection

I love editing videos, that is interesting and exciting. But I don't know how to teach my students to do so as the technique is so complicated.

However, with Adobe Spark Video, nothing is impossible. That is very user-friendly as they have lots of wonderful templates for students to manipulate. You know, students won't have any directions unless you give them a lot of guidance. Students just need to press a few buttons, they can make some videos by themselves easily! Time flies, it was impossible when I first became a teacher. Several years ago, I found that asking students to do video-editing was a hard task even though I taught some brilliant kids.  But now normal kids can also make some fantastic videos by themselves.

In addition, with screencasting tools, it is possible for students to do revision at home. Is it a kind of flipped classroom? I think some hard-working students, they really want to know what had happened in class when they take sick leave. Screencasting is something which can fulfill their wishes.

Session 6 (Oct 21): Promoting self-expression through audio activities and digital storytelling. Audacity Project: short poem, Stranger. (with voice and music)

We learnt how to use ‘Audacity’ tonight. It is very useful for listening and speaking. Student can make fun with it and listen back for what they have said. No better ways to improve their speaking skills by listening back their own recordings. And it is a funny way to do so! As students love music more than plain reading, ‘Audacity’ allows them to put background music which arouse their interests to make the recordings.
Paul introduced some videos about ‘digital storytelling for personal expression’ for us. They were amazing! With beautiful pictures and touching voice-over, digital story telling is powerful to tell experience and ideas. Only emotions can boost up one’s learning power, as students’ minds being enlightened, nothing is impossible.
Sounds are the main power and source for English learning, make good use of sounds recording tools would be essential for students.

Session 5 reflection

Nowadays, everybody is watching videos online. Even a small little kid would rather watching videos than reading books. It is inevitable to use videos for English learning now. In this lesson, we have visited a lot of websites about English learning. There were so many useful and meaningful English learning videos there. We always talk about flipping classroom these days, student need to be proactive in learning nowadays. With these websites, students are motivated to learn beforehand would not be a dream.

'Flocabulary' is so funny that we can learn something decent with 'hip hop' music. That is so cool! It is no doubt that students would not complaint learning is boring. In the old days, we manipulate videos a lot in teaching. But we can only pause the video and ask students verbally what we can learn from the video. Can students do it by themselves at home? With the help of Ted-Ed, we can assign students to watch videos at home and simultaneously do the questions. Moreover, we can produce a 'home-made' video with some students and add questions to the tailor-made video with 'edpuzzle'! That would be absolutely amazing for them and they would be greatly engaged in the learning process. As they can be part of the learning now! Amazing and engaging is how we describe the fantastic use of 'edpuzzle'. With that, we would fall in love with English learning.

EDpuzzle for 'personal pronouns and possessives'

Let's try this funny and wonderful video-questions English learning platform: TedEd. We learn prepositions together! ^_^

Session 4 reflection-----Amazing Quizlet

I am amazed by the wonderful interactive games tonight! They are wonderful with funny and playful functions!

'Bubble us' is a really interesting software that children can actually do it by themselves. As they can do the mind mapping by creating different blocks like playing online games, I think they would have great interest in learning the concepts of making mind maps. In my general studies lessons, students just refused to learn how to draw mind maps because they hate to write. But building blocks like this, they would absolutely like it!

Moreover, the most incredible app I encountered tonight would be Quizlet! With the amazing playing functions with this app, I have no doubt that students are learning English with tones of fun! They love games, they love timing the game they are playing. That is the thing that can combine the 2 fascinating purposes! That is the fusion of several great things in nowadays English learning: fun, interactive, real learning, attractive and playful!

Thanks Paul, with your great introduction, I am confident in getting my students' attention without any harsh work beforehand!

Session 2 reflection

In this session, we have learnt lots of self-learning tools form internet. They are wonderful for students to learn things by themselves.

We know that students nowadays are passive and have low motivation to learn. But they have great interest in using electronic devices for learning. It is amazing to combine the two things together: using E-resources and learn English on their own!

Especially for using 'thesaurus', students would know that 'word choices' can beautify what they have written.  If a teacher asks them to use another word to replace repeating words, they won't listen to it. But finding out different choices for the same meaning by themselves, they would love to do so as that's done by them. Students love to use things made by themselves rather than asked by others. Thus, using 'thesaurus' is a smart choice for enhancing their self-learning.

To learn proactively by students is the big trend in English teaching. And this lesson had introduced a lot of wonderful websites to do so. That is a fruitful treasure to boost up my teaching in the coming year. However, I need time to digest such a big treasure from the internet! :)

Session 3 quiz and tests

This session is all about making some interactive and funny games with different apps.

Classdojo will be welcomed by children for sure! They would love the monsters representing them and getting marks during the lessons. Their marks could be recorded and continue to show up in the next lessons. They would be excited about this.

Google form is so convenient to use as a test or revision for students. They can instantly know what they can master after a lesson. It is so interactive with their learning and they can adjust the incorrect concepts they have misunderstood.

Hotpotatoes are some interactive and interesting games that student would love to participate. They could make improvements step by step. That's a great learning tool for children. It won't be some plain and boring exercises anymore.

Session 1 reflection

What an amazing page that I can see in this lesson!

I am now in my MA lesson about information technology in English language teaching. I am amazed with what I am learning in this course. All the apps introduced by Ms Zoe Chan are so wonderful, amazing and useful in my career.

My school is running the 'Wifi 900' programme and asking all the teachers to using various apps with Ipad. All I can see in Zoe's page is the apps my school asking me to use. Quizlet allows you to make lots of learning games for students to play, students love that so much. The voting app is so useful for teachers to know their learning progress immediately. The Kahoot Quiz is an exciting app for students to participate. How wonderful these apps are!

I am now very excited and cannot wait to learn all of these apps! I really appreciate what this course is offering us. Thank you Paul!
